RV Sealant Tips That Actually Work: A Hands-On Guide

Water intrusion is one of the most common—and costly—issues RV owners face. Whether you’re sealing a roof vent, a window, or a vertical seam, using the right products and techniques can make all the difference in preventing leaks and protecting your rig.

Tips for properly sealing your RV

Start with Butyl Tape

Butyl tape is a go-to product for creating a watertight seal between surfaces. It’s flexible, sticky, and ideal for areas like roof vents and flanges. When applying it:

  • Make sure the surface is clean and dry.
  • Press the tape firmly into place to avoid gaps.
  • Don’t worry if some squeezes out—this is normal and part of the sealing process.

Trim the Excess

After installing the component over the butyl tape, use a plastic putty knife to gently trim away any excess that squeezes out. This step isn’t just about looks—it helps create a clean edge for your sealant and prevents buildup that can attract dirt or moisture.

Apply Sealant with Purpose

When it’s time to apply sealant, technique matters. We recommend the “push the bead” method, which involves pressing the sealant into the seam rather than dragging it across. This ensures better adhesion and coverage, especially around corners and screw heads.

Seal Vertical Surfaces Too

Sealant isn’t just for horizontal surfaces. You also need to apply it to vertical seams, where gravity and exposure can make leaks more likely. The same principles apply: clean surface, controlled bead, and consistent pressure. For vertical applications, choose a sealant that won’t sag and is rated for exterior use.

Products We Love

When it comes to sealant, choosing the right product for the job is just as important as applying it correctly. Here are two of our go-to sealants for RV repairs:

  • 🧴 Geocel RV Proflex (Clear): https://amzn.to/3VJGRVw
Ideal for vertical surfaces like trim and seams. It’s flexible, paintable, and holds up well in changing weather conditions.
  • 🧴 Geocel Advanced RV EPDM Roof Sealant: https://amzn.to/4pP3GEM
Designed specifically for EPDM roofs, this sealant is perfect for horizontal surfaces like roof vents and skylights. It adheres well and resists cracking over time.

We’ve used both of these in the field and trust them to deliver long-lasting, professional results.
